Dr. Garry J. Shaw
My work is divided between science journalism, focusing on archaeology and world heritage; travel writing with a heritage angle; writing books; and teaching about ancient history. As a science journalist, I write for a variety of magazines and newspapers, with my work regularly appearing in The Art Newspaper, Apollo Magazine, and Science Magazine’s online news. My articles have also been published in the history and travel magazine Timeless Travels, The Independent, Current World Archaeology, Rawi: Egypt’s Heritage Review (for which I was also editor), Showbiz Culture (the magazine of SC Exhibitions), and B.Inspired Magazine
I am a member of the Society of Authors.
Regarding my teaching and academic work: I hold a BA in archaeology, and an MA and PhD in Egyptology from the University of Liverpool, where I taught Egyptian history. I have taught at the American University in Cairo, the Bloomsbury Summer School, the Egypt Exploration Society in London, and as a part-time tutor for Oxford University’s Department for Continuing Education. I have given lectures for Egyptology societies and museums, both in the UK and around the world, and have published scholarly articles on Egyptian history in peer-reviewed journals. I have also written academic books, including my 2008 doctoral thesis, Royal Authority in Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty.
